From 2011, Active Communities Network has been working with Barclays Spaces for Sport and ABSA in South Africa to deliver a training and employment programme within the communities of Gaansbai in the Western Cape. Working from the Spaces For Sport facility, the project works with the Football Foundation South Africa, Exercise Teachers Academy, the Western Cape Municipality and Changebox Training to deliver a comprehensive training programme for 16 – 19 year olds who are unemployed or under-employed in the area. Following consultation with all parties, Active Communities staff will oversee and help deliver a programme that will offer:
- Leadership Training Programme
- Role Model Training Programme
- Accredited Coaching Science Units
- Accredited Sport Specific Coaching Units
- Accredited Sports Management / Administration Units
- Mentoring
- Work Placement
In delivering this programme we will capacity the local community to utilise the facilities at Gannsbai, improve the employability of individual participants, and offer new role models and community leadership skills to the wider community in the area. The programme is being independently evaluated by local academic institutions.
